HABs or Harmful algal blooms occur when these large population grow out of control through eutrophication and produce toxins or lower the dissolved oxygen content of the surrounding water environment, killing fish and other organisms. This dead organic matter then becomes extra nutrient for the blooms, increasing the size and rate of the bloom. HABs create a dead zone in an aquatic environment when they are allowed to grow.
